MOONLYGHT - PROGRESSIVE DARKNESS

TRACKLIST
01. Fantasy
02. The Sceptic Traveller
03. Ride On Ice Storms
04. A Tale From A Fantastic Kingdom
05. The Autumn's Freezing Harmony
06. From Honour To Nothingness
07. Progressive Darkness

The Canadian province of Quebec is the land of several excellent Death Metal bands such as Cryptopsy and Kataklysm. Now you can extend that list to another pearl, Moonlyght. But unlike the aforementioned bands, the musicians from Moonlyght play a complex progressive mix of Melodic Death, Black, Folk, Gothic even Power Metal with a large symphonic component, which so far was why a band like Vintersorg topped lots of other bands. Moonlyght is another serious challenger to doing that and the well-entitled debut-album "Progressive Darkness" [released in 2002] is there to prove me right. "Progressive Darkness" is a collection of 7 epic songs [6 of them over 7 minutes, the last one reaching almost 12 minutes], each one is a precious part of the whole.
Moonlyght's art of writing and playing varied and inspired melodies is one of their forces. I still don't understand how it's possible to come up with such beautiful melodies but that's why I'm absolutely imploring you to check these guys out! Moonlyght has it all to surge as one of the revelations of this year, they just need more support and publicity to become as famous as Opeth, because talent and music are already there! As Roby himself wrote, "We will paint your heart with the ice of the moonlight" [from the lyrics of 'Ride On Ice Storms'], I certainly hope so! And be ready for the next album already in preparation, I can't wait to have a listen to that one. But for right now, Rush to www.moonlyght.ca and act to support this talented band. You won't regret it.

DISMAL EUPHONY - SORIA MORIA SLOTT

Tracklist:
01 – Prolog
02 – Et Vintereventyr
03 – Natten Loftet Sitt Tunge Ansikt
04 – Alvedans
05 – Fortidssjeledrepte
06 – Trollbundet
07 – Ekko
08 – Isgrav, Det Siste Hvilested
09 – Epilog

Don't let the fact that Dismal Euphony utilizes synths and female vocals dissuade you from giving this Black Metal masterpiece a spin or ten. Throughout this album the listener is constantly shuffled back and forth amongst such diverse elements as: ethereal, haunting melodic vocal duets; ripping and distorted Black Metal guitar riffing driven by oddly muffled, blasting drumming; epic metalized folk melodies akin to the earlier work of Summoning; and grim, raw Black Metal pandemonium. All the vocals are sung in Norwegian.
Unlike later D.E. releases, this one has vague production values that only serve to accentuate the atmosphere elicited by the terrific ensemble playing. This album should please Black Metal fans of all camps. From Darkthrone-worshipping grim-meisters to those who appreciate epic, symphonic Black Metal with outstanding male/female vocal interplay and lofty synth injections, this release should be a mandatory inclusion in any serious Black Metal collection.

SCAR SYMMETRY - HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE

Tracklist:
1.- Morphogenesis
2.- Timewave Zero
3.- Quantumleaper
4.- Artificial Sun Projection
5.- The Missing Coordinates
6.- Ghost Prototype I (Measurement of Thought)
7.- Fear CatalysT
8.- Trapezoid
9.- Prism and Gate
10.- Holographic Universe
11.- The Three-Dimensional Shadow
12.- Ghost Prototype II (Deus Ex Machina)

Progressive melodic death metal. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? If images of Dream Theater holding hands with Gothenburg’s finest are floating happily through your conscious, you’re not far off. But it’s more complex than that. You see, barring the band’s Swedish origins, Scar Symmetry aren’t your everyday melodeath band. Sure, the requisite In Flames/At the Gates/Dark Tranquillity comparisons hold true in overall sound, but that’s inescapable (not to mention superficial), and no fault of Scar Symmetry’s.
Where our subjects here separate themselves from rest of their ilk is in actual songwriting; as in, they compose pieces that are possible to tell apart upon even the second listen. Each of the tracks stick to Scar Symmetry’s distinct, yet unique, blend of traditional Swedish melodic death metal, solos straight from John Petrucci’s songbook and a dynamic performance from former frontman Christian Älvestam, who unfortunately quit the band in mid-September.Consequently, the main contribution to Scar Symmetry’s unique sound is the band’s refusal to hide its countrymen’s influences. Mathy Meshuggah breakdowns lead "Timewave Zero" and "Fear Catalyst" to satisfying conclusions, "Ghost Prototype I – Measurement of Thought" and "Prism and Gate" bear more than a passing resemblance to Arch Enemy’s Amott brothers in riffing style and the lengthy, Opethian title track is the band’s most progressive composition to date. But perhaps the artist with the largest impact on Scar Symmetry’s sound is prog/folk metal master Vintersorg, whose clean baritone delivery and cosmically themed lyrics have made their way into every track on Holographic Universe.

MY DYING BRIDE - THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE WORLD

TRACKLIST:
01. She Is The Dark
02. Edenbeast
03. The Night He Died
04. The Light At The
End Of The World
05. The Fever Sea
06. Into The Lake Of Ghosts
07. The Isis Script
08. Christliar
09. Sear Me III

The Light at the End of the World is an album by Dying Bride, released in 1999. After the more experimental 34.788%...Complete, this album marks a return to the more traditional My Dying Bride doom sound and style of lyrics. It was also the first My Dying Bride release since 1994's "The Sexuality of Bereavement" to feature growling vocals, although Aaron Stainthorpe has noticeably changed his style and broadened his range. All guitar parts on the album were recorded by Andrew Craighan, following the earlier departure of Calvin Robertshaw. Following Robertshaw's departure, only Craighan and Stainthorpe remained as founding members of the band. Hamish Glencross was soon after recruited as permanent guitarist. The keyboard parts were played by Jonny Maudling of Bal-Sagoth. It is also the first MDB album to feature the drumming of Shaun Steels, who would remain with the band until 2006.
In my opinion this is the best My Dying Bride album so far.......its astonishing and any doom metal fan will love it.....just check it out and if you like it leave a comment...

MY DYING BRIDE - SONGS OF DARKNESS, WORDS OF LIGHT

TRACKLIST
01. The Wreckage Of My Flesh
02. The Scarlet Garden
03. Catherine Blake
04. My Wine In Silence
05. The Prize Of Beauty
06. The Blue Lotus
07. And My Fury Stands Ready
08. A Doomed Lover

After the utter success of The Dreadful Hours, often considered as their best album, it was not easy to release something at least as good.
Great expectations surrounded Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light, expectations boosted by the delay due to artwork issues [the artwork, that for once was not designed by Aaron Stainthorpe, is as disturbing as the music].
Believe me, these expectations are not disappointed. Let's not keep the suspense, the last My Dying Bride is at least as good as The Dreadful Hours, and probably even better.

It is, you'll have noticed, quite hard to describe Songs Of Darkness, Words Of Light. You'll really need to listen to it to have a more acute idea of its content. You only have to know that the biggest quality of this album is, beyond the music itself, more than ever its atmospheres, and the ability of My Dying Bride to really create emotive surroundings. Be ready to feel what you've never felt before...

MY DYING BRIDE - AS THE FLOWER WITHERS

TRACKLIST
01. Silent Dance
02. Sear Me
03. The Forever People
04. The Bitterness
And The Bereavement
05. Vast Choirs
06. The Return Of The Beautiful
07. Erotic Literature

My Dying Bride is one of the most influential bands in the doom/death metal scene (and not only); may I say doom/death itself? Formed back in 1990 by Calvin, Aaron, Andy and Rick and having already released two demos ("Towards the sinister" and "God is alone") and an interesting EP ("Symphonaire Infernus et Spera Empyrium") they release during 1992 their long-awaited debut album "As the flower withers". Pure doom/death metal with death metal outbursts and Aaron being an utterly descriptive interpreter, inspiration, intense poetic lyrics with a sense of mourning romanticism and a dark wailing atmosphere consist of this wonderful debut album leaving behind a bitter taste of a dying bride, My Dying Bride…

SIRENIA - AN ELIXIR FOR EXISTANCE

Tracklist:
1.- Lithium And A Lover
2.- Voices Within
3.- A Mental Symphony
4.- Euphoria
5.- In My Darkest Hours
6.- Save Me From Myself
7.- The Fall Within
8.- Star-Crossed
9.- Seven Sirens And A Silver Tear

Norwegian Gothic master, Morten Veland (ex- Tristania) is back with his new band, Sirenia, and their second release, "An Elixir for Existence".After being kicked out of Tristania, Morten in 2002 released Sirenia's first opus, "At Sixes And Sevens", which got very good critic worldwide (at the same time Tristania's last release, didn't get as much good words). And now, two years later, their new one is here, and it's once again a very great album, composed by Mr. Veland.
A must have for Tristania fans, and a very decent album for all atmospheric or doom metal fans...

PANTHEIST - THE PAINS OF SLEEP

Tracklist:
1.- The Pains Of Sleep
2.- Pavor Nocturnus
3.- For Funerals To Come
4.- Intro (1000 Years
5.- Time
6.- Lust
7.- Envy Us
8.- Liefde Voor Niemand
9.- 1000 Years

Pantheist, allow me to say that, so far have managed to pave their own path in the fields of funeral doom, something difficult-seeming since almost everything has been set during the 90s, yet something so easy judging from the words of Kostas Panagiotou, simply because it's a matter of personal expression and experience. It's true that bands like Pantheist are needed since they offer fresh air to the scene and it's always awesome to see them progress their sound from album to album. After two magnificent releases, "O Solitude" and "Amartia", a new and strong line-up and a change of geographic base Pantheist are ready to make their next break-through in the fields of doom, but before that, we can take a glimpse of what will follow, but also a taste of how it all began.
"The Pains Of Sleep" is a must-have for the funeral doom metal scene since it comes from a band which progresses its own sound step by step and another gift for all the Pantheist fans, the most ideal one at the moment! Close the lights, light a few candles in memory of loved ones and seek them in the devout beauty of the dark that Pantheist wholeheartedly created...

PANTHEIST - O SOLITUDE

Track Listing:

1.- O Solitude
2.- Don't Mourn
3.- Time
4.- Envy Us
5.- Curse The Morning Light

In the dictionary next to 'Funeral Doom' it says 'see Pantheist, noob.' I mean, what else is there to say about one of the pillars of a genre? Following in the footsteps of the legendary Thergothon, Pantheist are one of the mainstays of a very underground, and underrated genre. "O Solitude" was their first full-length album, and it carried Funeral Doom into the new millenium with a slow and heavy tread.
The expected elements are all here: the slow, crushing riffs, the melodic keys, the vocals that alternate between a depressed growl and a depressed monotone. What is surprising is the things Pantheist do that are not usually found on Funeral Doom albums: faster riffs that engender headbanging, and drums that kick faster than once per minute. On the huge opening track, and then on the monumental fourteen minute "Don't Mourn", Pantheist show off Doom epics that actually kick into a higher gear now and again, even bordering on Death Metal sounds in places, before they slooooow back down and crush you to death again. The other three songs are not quite as innovative or compelling, and the interminable "Curse The Morning Light" wears a bit thin after eighteen minutes, but really, Pantheist never drop the ball, and it is plain why this album is one of the first three people mention when they talk about Funeral Doom. Defining and essential.
